Proposal -LO3
Genre: documentary, infotainment and special interest.
The following genres were chosen because I want the video to be informative and entertaining at the same time as our target audience prefer this type of documentaries. Special interest is there because not everyone is interested in getting a tattoo or a piercing so the only people that would be interested in watching this will be people who are interested in this topic, which isn't a lot of people.
Develop ideas:
Programme concept - An informative documentary about Tattoos and Piercings. This subject has a very few documentaries based on it plus, I don't think that this idea will clash with any of the other classmates. A lot of my friends and most people around me have got either a piercing or a tattoo in their body so I was curious as to why this has been on trend lately. I want to use this opportunity to explore about the rise of this subject and people's opinion on it. It's a documentary for people who are curious about why people get it and for those who want to get some themselves. Hence, I want to include information on what the right and the wrong thing is to do when getting a tattoo and piercing. Area 51 will acts as a specialist and provide information and visuals for us.
Target audience – Teenagers and young adults aged 16 to 24 as they are more likely to be interested in getting a tattoo and piercing, plus one can legally get piercing from the age of 16 and a tattoo from 18.
Synopsis – Ever wondered why and how it's like to get a tattoo or a piercing? Come and explore with us on 'Ink & Needles'.
Research:
Primary sources – Interviewing people for our video will be our primary research as we are gathering the information first hand by ourself.
Secondary sources – We researched Area 51's official website to check whether they were a reliable source or not and to contact them. We also looked at their customer reviews. Most of our researches were done through secondary research as most of the answers are available online on the internet.
Legal and ethical considerations:
We will be filming on a public street, Festival Place, and on a public shop, Area 51, so we have produced a consent form for people that we will film to sign. We have also already asked for filming permission to the manager of Area 51. The information that we present might not be accurate as, the answers of the people that we interview are not facts and can be subjective. It might seem like we are glorifying the use of tattoos and piercings as obviously people who have got tattoos and Area 51, being a shop that specialises in that area, is bound to give positive answers about the subject. Therefore, we will also interview people who don't have it to show a close to true representation of the public's opinion. In order to respect the privacy of the people we interview, we’ll give them the option to not film their face and to only ask and show their first name on the screen, to protect them. To avoid libel and defamation from occurring, we are going to confirm the accuracy of our data before presenting it.
Planning:
Ruth - pre-production, responsible for contacting Area 51, camera person, interviewee.
Jina - interviewee, camera person, pre-production, interview questions.
Purpose of research:
Key facts about topic:
Tattoos and piercings have been on rise lately and hence, being more accepted by the public. Area 51 is a licensed tattoo and piercing studio based in Basingstoke, Town centre. They offer service such as body piercing, microdermals, laser tattoo removal, permanent cosmetics, all tattoo categories and selection of body jewellery with free measuring and fitting. Area 51 has been running since 1997. The business runs from 10 am to 5pm during Tuesday to Saturday but, the body piercing service starts only from 11 am to 4:30pm. They have an official website, www.area51.co.uk, which offers information about them and their service along with discounts and gift voucher offers. They also have a profile on their website about their tattoo artists.
Identify potential issues:
It used to be connoted as a bad thing to have but now it’s a trend. Prior to its popularity, mostly only rockers had them. Now people have it as a fashion accessory. There is a certain age restriction on who can get a tattoo and a piercing, even with parents’ consent. If tattoos and piercings are not taken good aftercare then it might turn into an infection, blood poisoning, etc. Risks that comes with tattooing, allergic reactions from the tattoo dye, skin infection, skin problems such as granulomas and keloids, blood borne diseases, MRI complications. There is no law that prohibits discrimination against people with visible body piercings and visible tattoo. It is slowly getting accepted but it’s not there yet so people are still not able to get a job. Due to the public viewing them as a thing which only bad people have and therefore, the employers feel that the customers might feel offended or be scared to come in their shop.

Tattoos and piercings have been on rise lately and being more accepted by people. It used to be connoted as a bad thing to have but now it’s a trend. Prior to its popularity, mostly only rockers had them. Now people have it as a fashion accessory. It’s mostly popular among teenagers to have it as they like to be on the trend. So, we interviewed some teenagers about their opinion on tattoos and piercings to find out why exactly they were getting it.
-Interview with students-
Tattoos and piercings, especially tattoos have not only been taking teenagers by storm but also older people who are in their 30s to 60s. This has been appealing to a wide range of audience. Therefore, we also interviewed this range of people to find out their view on the subject.
-Interview with town people-
There is no law that prohibits discrimination against people with visible body piercings and visible tattoos. However, due to the public previously viewing them as a rebelling thing to have, the employers feel that the customers might feel offended or be scared to come in their shop so, they avoid employing people with visible tattoos and lots of piercings. Though, this is slowly being changed as some companies employ people regardless of what they have in their body but, you will have to either hide or conceal your tattoos and piercings. There still isn't the freedom to proudly show your body art so; most people get inked in places where others can’t see like, on their back, thighs or their shoulders.
(Voice over)Next, we went to Area 51, a licensed tattoo and piercing studio based in Basingstoke Town center. They have been in the business for over 17 years.
-Area 51 interview-
-Alice interview-
(Voice over)If tattoos and piercings are not given good aftercare then it might turn into an infection, which may then lead to blood poisoning, which can be life threatening. Risks that come with tattooing include allergic reactions from the tattoo dye, skin infection, skin problems such as granulomas and keloids, blood borne diseases and MRI complications. As for the piercings, in case of the needle or the jewellery not being sterile, there’s the risk of contracting blood viruses like hepatitis and HIV. Swelling may occur in the area you pierced. However, be extra careful if you are getting your tongue pierced as it may swell twice its normal size. Therefore, it’s important to wear the correct size jewellery to avoid this as it could be a sign of an infection. You may also get an allergic reaction to the jewellery metal or the aftercare products. However, most piercers use titanium or implant grade stainless steel to avoid this from happening. Embedding could also happen, which is essentially the jewellery moving from its original position. This could be because of an infection, using wrong type of jewellery or because of the piercing being done at a young age and your body just growing. Scarring could happen as a result of poor jewellery insertion, embedding, infection or poor healing. Also, remember to never pierce or tattoo yourself or even to ask or let your friend do it for you unless they’re a professional. This creates a higher risk of infection and injury.
Having tattoos and piercings isn't a bad thing however, there are risks and obstacles that may occur like not getting a job or having to conceal it every day to work, which can be tiring. For sure it looks cool to have and when everybody is getting it, you get tempted to have it too however, it’s a lifelong decision so, think carefully and decide.
