Unit 23: Multi-camera Techniques Evaluation
For this unit, we had to film a live college Christmas concert. We had to be in groups of 5 people as there were 5 roles for us to fill in. There were 3 cameras and they were operated by Ruth in the safety camera, Shaun in the left camera but only for the rehearsal as he wasn’t able to make it to the actual performance hence, we had Lucy in that camera on the day, and Matt was in the right camera. Robyn took the role of vision mixing while, I took the role of both directing and floor management as they serve similar roles of making sure that everything is working fine. In my view, I think that the communication within the group was quite weak before the shoot as, during the practice shoot we found out that one of our camera operators won’t be able to make it to the real performance therefore; we had to find someone to fill in for him. Other than that, we all knew what our role was and what we had to do. Our group communication was pretty strong during the actual performance as, when someone had a problem we messaged each other to report about it and I went to solve them being the director/ floor manager.
During the practice shoot, we tested out all of the shots to see which shot would look better or fit better with the music and the performance. We decided to mainly use long shots for the orchestra performance, while we chose to use a lot of close ups and different angle shots for the normal performances. As for the musical performances that involved people dancing around, we used wide shots during the dancing moments to show the movements while we solely focused on the singers during the parts where only singing was happening. The editing decision was left to the vision mixer as she was responsible for the mixing since, she was the only one who was able to see all of the camera shots on her screen. The pace of the transitions was made according to the pace of the music by the mixer. The health and safety considerations that were taken to ensure that the shooting went fine was making sure that the wires were plugged in correctly to avoid any electrical damages and injures. Being careful when walking around so that no-one trips on the wire, they were tapped to the floor to further avoid this as the audience members could get injured along with, the camera possibly getting damaged.
Overall, the concert was a success because we didn’t have any major complication during the shooting process and everything went smoothly. The only problem that we had was that, one of the camera operator was not able to operator their camera as people were surrounding that area and making it difficult for her to get near the camera. However, that was solved by asking them to kindly move to another place to watch the performance but it was a bit of a long process as the camera operator was quite distressed by it so, I had to calm her down. If I were to do this unit again, I would like to try a different role and would make sure that the team members are able to make it to the real performance. I would also like to confirm with the music department about the running order list as due to some performers not attending the show, the performances involving them was cut out but we were not aware of this so we were taken a bit by surprise.
